Build or buy
ComplyStream or a custom FBR integration?
A PKR 20,000–100,000 agency quote may be sensible, too cheap or incomplete. The useful comparison is what runs after the first successful API call.
What a custom quote should include
In the Pakistani market you may see a PKR 20,000–100,000 quote for “FBR API integration”. Ask whether it includes Shopify app authentication, order and refund events, field mapping, sandbox and production environments, token encryption, IP whitelisting, retries, duplicate prevention, an operator screen, logs, deployment and post-launch support.
If the scope is only “send this JSON to this endpoint”, the low price is understandable. It is not yet a production workflow.
Where ComplyStream is cheaper
For a standard Shopify store, the reusable parts already exist: app installation, permissions, order reading, environment settings, validation, submission status and operated hosting. You pay a monthly plan tied to invoice volume instead of funding those foundations for one store.
You also avoid relying on the original freelancer whenever Shopify or FBR changes a field. That does not mean every change is instant or that app fees are always lower over many years; it means maintenance is part of the product rather than an undefined future quote.
Where custom is better
Choose custom when Shopify is only one input into an ERP-led dispatch process, when you have unusual B2B contracts and credit workflows, when invoices need proprietary approvals, or when your internal engineering team must own the complete data path. A Lahore wholesaler running inventory and accounts in an ERP should usually integrate at the system of record, not at the storefront.
Ownership and vendor risk
With a custom build
Put source-code ownership, hosting, documentation, credentials, monitoring and hand-over in writing. Require an idempotency strategy so retries cannot create unintended duplicates. Budget for maintenance and identify who responds when a schema change arrives during a sale.
With ComplyStream
You depend on our hosted product and published plan. You retain your Shopify store, IRIS relationship and token, but you do not own ComplyStream source code. You can rotate credentials and uninstall; switching later may require exporting or reconciling invoice records.
Compare the first twelve months
For custom, add discovery, build, cloud hosting, monitoring, fixes and one realistic change request to the quoted PKR amount. For ComplyStream, add twelve months at your expected volume plus the internal time to map products and test. Both choices require tax decisions from your side.
Questions to ask before signing
- Is the supplier claiming licensed-integrator status? Verify it on FBR's list.
- How are tokens encrypted, rotated and prevented from appearing in logs?
- What happens on timeouts, duplicate webhooks and partial failures?
- Who updates tax mappings, and who owns tax decisions?
- Can operators see and retry a rejected invoice without calling a developer?
Our honest position
ComplyStream suits Shopify-first merchants with repeatable order structures. It is not a replacement for a tailored ERP integration or a licensed integrator. Start with the sandbox setup, compare plan costs, and commission custom work if your real exceptions dominate the standard flow.
